#1. Publisher’s Weekly call My Sister’s Keeper is “a spellbinding suspense novel.” Give your input on why this magazine might call this story suspenseful. Think about the way the book is written from different perspectives and how sections end. Do you want to read more? Are there things that are a mystery in the story? How does Jodi Picoult reveal these secrets as the story moves along? Are there any questions that you want to know at this point in the story? My Sister’s Keeper is a thrilling book that will always grab your attention. I think this magazine will call it suspenseful because there are so many events that can change the whole meaning and focus of the story. It always keeps you reading to the bit end. The good thing about this book is that you can see the story through the perspectives of all the people in the family and more. It gives you an idea of how they feel and how they feel about Kate’s disease. Every time and interesting part comes; I always want to keep reading to the end of the next chapter or more. There are also many good quotes from the book too. I like the quote from Jesse saying “Kate plays the martyr. I’m the lost cause. And you are the Peacekeeper.” (Page 17) I think that there are many mysteries in the story. One thing that I think is interesting and mysterious to say is from Anna, “I used to pretend that I was just passing through this family on my way to the real one.” (57). Jodi Picoult reveals these secrets through the different twists and turns of the story. One question that I have is “why would her parents ever treat Anna the way they do if they want to save their daughter?”
#2. What is your opinion of Sara? With her life focused on saving Kate, she sometimes neglects her other children. Jesse is rapidly becoming a juvenile delinquent, and Anna is invisible -- a fact that the little girl knows only too well. What does this say about Sara's role as a mother? What would you have done in her shoes? Has she unwittingly forgotten Jesse and Anna, or do you think she has consciously chosen to neglect them -- either as an attempt to save a little energy for herself, or as some kind of punishment? Does Sara resent her other children for being healthy? Did you find yourself criticizing Sara, empathizing with her, or both? My opinion of Sara is not a good one. I feel like that she is very rude and selfish. I cannot believe the way she treats Anna, it is so mean and unbelievable. By neglecting her kids, it shows that she is not a good mother. It seems that the only person she cares about is Kate. Anna is saving her daughter’s life and Sara doesn’t even bother to treat her with respect. When Sara found out that Anna was suing her Sara slapped Anna in the face. Anna said “she slaps my face hard enough to make my head snap backward. She leaves a print that stains long after it’s faded. Just so you know: shame is five-fingered.” (page 64). What mother would ever treat their child like that? If I were in her shows I would talk to Anna and understand where she is coming from. I would pay more attention to Anna and her feelings. Also, I would show more love and interest to the both Jesse and Anna. I think that she has consciously chosen to ignore them. They are not the number one priority in her life. All of her children should be a number one priority. She feels that because Kate has the disease, she needs the most attention. It also might be a punishment to her because she might think that the other children do not really care about Kate and her dying. Sara definitely resents her other children for being healthy. She acts like they need no help or attention because they are healthy enough to do it by themselves. By being healthy, you do not need as much care. It almost seems like she rather have Kate healthy and one of her other “bad” kids to be sick. I definitely find myself criticizing her because she is a terrible mother.
